Richmond is a big city with lots to do, which can make picking what to do when visiting something of a daunting task. Because of that, here’s a list of some indoor and outdoor activities to look into when you’re visiting the River City either by yourself or with others.
Indoor
Given that that the weather in Richmond doesn’t always cooperate, having indoor activities lined up is a must so that you aren’t left scrambling to find something to do. Fortunately, Richmond offers a wide range of indoor activities that are perfect for when the weather isn’t.
For those looking to add a touch of culture to their visit, the Virginia Science Museum, featuring an IMAX theater, the Children’s Museum or Richmond, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) offer culture for all tastes and age groups.
If you’re looking to do some shopping on a rainy day during your visit, both Short Pump Town Center and Stony Point Fashion Park offer great shops that are sure to have something you’ll enjoy, as well as plenty of places to grab a bite to eat.
While there are plenty of theaters around the city, if you want to visit one that is distinctly “Richmond” then the Byrd is your only real option. Offering movies on their last run before being available on DVD, you can catch a movie at this Carytown theater for $2 (cash only).
Outdoor
When the weather in Richmond does cooperate (which it usually does) there are great outdoor activities and places to experience during your visit to the city, with everything from the super active to the casual depending on how much effort you want to put into being outdoors.
Anybody that loves nature would be remiss if they didn’t take a trip to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens or Maymont Park. Both offer a great way for families, couples, and individuals to get fresh air and experience Richmond with their open walking areas and everything from standard gardens, to water features and even a petting zoo in Maymont.
For those that are a bit more active in their outdoor pursuits, Belle Isle has it all. Paths for hiking and jogging, water for swimming and kayaking, and a rocky area that’s great for jumping around on or spreading out a blanket and sunbathing. Comfy shoes are a must though.
For those looking for a more boutique shopping and dining experience, Carytown is a great place to walk around, buy some unique items to take home with you, and grab a bite at one of a kind restaurants. You can even combine an indoor activity by hitting up a movie at the Byrd.
